Do security alarm dialers work over cellular POTS replacement?
Most modern security alarm panels communicate over both POTS and cellular already. If yours uses only POTS to call the monitoring station, a cellular POTS replacer will maintain that analog dial-out path. However, many alarm companies are also pushing for native dual-path (cellular + IP) communicators, which eliminate the POTS dependency entirely.
Does my security alarm POTS replacement need to be UL-listed?
It depends on your monitoring contract and local requirements. Commercial intrusion alarm monitoring often requires UL 2050 listed equipment for the communication path. Residential monitoring typically has fewer requirements. Check with your monitoring company and AHJ.
What happens to my security alarm if AT&T retires my wire center?
If your alarm panel dials out over a POTS line and that line is in a retiring wire center, the panel loses its monitored connection when AT&T disconnects the line. Depending on your monitoring agreement, this may trigger a service disruption notice. Replace the line before the retirement date.
Can I use cellular POTS replacement for gate intercoms?
Yes. Gate intercoms and access control panels that use analog POTS lines work well with cellular POTS replacers — these devices are lower-sensitivity than fax machines and work reliably over cellular. The intercom or gate dialer continues operating normally; the cellular device replaces the physical phone line.
